For 50 years, a forgotten schematic sat buried in dust and time – a concept waiting to be born. Now, its moment has come. The EHX Dual Op-Amp Big Muff 2 is here, delivering a completely new Big Muff voice unlike anything you’ve heard before.

THE PAST & PRESENT

In 2021, while on a research trip that led to the creation of the book Made On Earth For Rising Stars: The Electro-Harmonix Story, we had the privilege of digging through decades of materials, memorabilia, devices, and prototypes in the workshop of Bob Myer, the inventor of the EHX Big Muff. It was there we discovered it: a loose sheet of paper with a hand-drawn schematic labeled “BIG MUFF USING (2 DUAL OP AMPS)”.

This wasn’t just another circuit. It was Bob Myer’s own attempt to reimagine the original transistorized Big Muff circuit using the new cutting-edge Op-Amp technology that had emerged later in the 1970s.

For nearly 50 years, this “Lost Big Muff” design sat forgotten in his notebooks — until now.  We found it. We built it. And have brought it to life.

WHAT MAKES THE BIG MUFF 2 DIFFERENT?

Once discovered, we breadboarded the circuit exactly as Bob drew it, and immediately knew we had something worth making.  We found that Bob’s design is unique when compared to the now famous late 70s Op-Amp Big Muff designed by Michael Abrams. Different clipping arrangement, an extra gain stage and various other elements that made this lost version extremely special.

Where the original Big Muff delivers that iconic "sweet violin-like sustain," Bob's two dual Op-Amp approach pushes into more aggressive, cutting territory. It's the Big Muff DNA with a sharper edge, more volume, and the most pronounced low-end and midrange of any EHX Big Muff ever. It expresses Bob's vision of aggressive sustain and cutting presence, with the familiar Big Muff control layout you know and love.  It’s the sound of what almost was.

Mike Matthews himself, after hearing our prototype, admitted it had "something special" even though it strayed from the traditional Big Muff voicing he typically preferred. Sometimes the best creations are the ones that don't follow the rules.

VOLUME - Controls the output volume. Left is less, right is more.

SUSTAIN - Controls the amount of fuzz, which increases the sustain when turned up. Left is less, right is more.

TONE - Controls the overall tone. Left is darker, right is brighter.

POWER - 9VDC center negative, 18mA

AN ALTERNATE TIMELINE BIG MUFF

The collaborative result between JHS Pedals, Electro-Harmonix, and official EHX archivist Daniel Danger represents more than just a new pedal — it's a piece of lost music history resurrected for today.

THE STORY CONTINUES

This pedal is directly connected to the book "Made On Earth For Rising Stars: The Electro-Harmonix Story,” the definitive visual history of Electro-Harmonix, spanning 1968 through the 2020s.  A historic collaboration between EHX, JHS Pedals, Third Man Books, and artist/archivist Daniel Danger.  This expansive book explores everything from Mike Matthews himself to the production floor — from circuit designers to the manic pursuit of curing death, from flying machines to disco towers.  Packed with never-before-seen prototypes, unreleased pedals, vintage documents, and rare photographs, this book captures the chaos, creativity, and genius that made EHX a legend — from the circuit bench to the world stage.

From Bob Myer's original forgotten workshop to your pedalboard — the Big Muff 2 is the sound of history reborn.*

Not a bad buy
Size: 36inch, Color: Light Walnut, Size: 36inch, Color: Light Walnut
Very Light weight, they look great though. Fairly easy to put together. Came with all parts I’ll be it scattered and the screws don’t look sturdy but I won’t be using the ones that it came with. Overall, fair price, quality is fair as well.

They worked for replacing shelves but I wouldn’t mount them on my wall
Size: 24inch, Color: Walnut
I specifically bought these shelves because of their dimensions. I have a built-in cabinet and when we moved in 6 or so years ago, the previous owners must have taken them with them when they moved. It’s been bothering me the whole time I’ve lived here and wanted to make some but just never found the time to get around to it. I measured them out and these floating shelves were perfect for the dimensions I needed to replace the missing shelves. Would I put these on my wall(s)? Absolutely not unless I corrected the mounting issues. One thing that really stuck out to me was how bad the design was for mounting these shelves. When I took them out of the packaging, the brackets were falling out of the back everywhere. This did not inspire too much confidence that if I hung them up, they would be stable. I’ve had a ton of floating shelves similar to this mounting design, but the arms that the boards slide into on the wall for this particular shelving are thin and flat (while being easily mailable with your hand alone) in comparison to every other one I’ve had being round, or at least decently thick, sometimes with additional screws that you can insert under the board and into the mounting arms for extra stability. Also, any time I’ve ever had to mount a similar floating shelf, it took some finesse and strength to release the mounting arms from the back of the shelf because they fit very snugly. The fact that the mounting brackets were falling out of the back means that they are not snug and prone to be very loose. Another thing that stuck out to me is that the shelves are hollow. Now, for my purposes, this is fine, but again, detracts significantly from the confidence that these would be stable if mounted on the wall and would most likely droop when weight was applied. I also took issue with the fact the boards had no protective covering and were jammed into a box, with the hardware pressing against one of the boards tightly. I just flipped the shelf over to mask the defect from packaging but the side I wanted to use because it had better coloring was the damaged side. Mine did not come with any mounting directions but some common sense would be all you needed to put up something so simple. However, it did not come with a template to mark the wall for spacing, which adds to the difficulty because you have to have precise DIY measurements to slide the boards onto the mounting arms correctly. To be honest, if I were to mount these, I would bypass the shoddy mounting provided and go with some heavy, durable brackets underneath. Overall, these shelves worked for my purposes but I can see how the reviews would be very mixed in terms of mounting and quality. I did get these on a limited time deal and they were priced at approximately $8 per shelf, which was a really good deal to get 4 shelves for that price in comparison to the “normal” price resulting in approximately $11/shelf. I wouldn’t have paid full price for these and would have been highly disappointed had I with the intention to mount them, especially since I would have needed to provide better and more stable mounting hardware. They are lesser quality than others within the same price range and I think you could do much better if your intention is to mount them.
